National Packaging Covenant
The NPC is a voluntary agreement between industries in the packaging chain and all spheres of government, based on the principles of shared responsibility through product stewardship, and applied throughout the packaging chain, from raw material suppliers to retailers and the ultimate disposal of waste packaging.
Super Cheap Auto Group is committed to establishing a 'framework for the effective life cycle management of consumer packaging' through an educational approach internally with our team, our trade partners and our customers. As a part of this plan and Super Cheap Auto Group's focus on future sustainability we aim to:
- Reduce the amount of actual packaging used in our products (primarily house brand).
- Use packaging that is sourced from recycled product where feasible.
- Use packaging that is made from recyclable materials where feasible.
- Re-use packaging where feasible.
- Recycle in the workplace 'like we do at home'.
- Inform our customers of the recycling abilities of the packaging they have obtained.
- Analyse, monitor, review and report on our progress, and update our NPC Action Plan annually.
- Recycle actual product were possible (eg. lead acid batteries).
Environmental Code of Practice for Packaging
Paper Usage Reduction
Super Cheap Auto Group is committed to using our resources such as office paper as efficiently as possible. All office team members are encouraged not to print and copy unnecessarily and our processes are changing to encourage this further.
Some changes we are currently implementing are the way:
- we supply and deliver payroll information
- our Support Office receives faxes
- our new team members are sent information
- our vendors send invoicing information
- we send information to the stores.
We are further complementing this with an office recycling program, where office waste, including non confidential information is recycled locally.
Plastic Bag Reduction
Super Cheap Auto Group is committed to meet all applicable local, state and federal environmental requirements for single use plastic bags. We are currently reviewing our usage and exploring options to reduce or better utilise this resource.
Power Usage Reduction
Super Cheap Auto Group is currently exploring options to reduce power usage. These include
- Behavioural control - educating Team Members on how to reduce power usage
- Install control equipment, eg. light sensors
- Structural - skylights
- Energy saving devices, eg. dimmers
Catalogue Paper Reduction/Recycling
Super Cheap Auto Group is committed to utilising paper that is produced from fully sustainable diverse rainforests that are independently certified and are fully recyclable. Supercheap Auto & Goldcross Cycles catalogues are now produced in line with this commitment with BCF soon to follow. BCF's catalogues are currently printed on a paper that varies between 60 to 80% recycled paper.
Remember catalogues are 100% recyclable so please consider this when disposing of them.
Customer Oil and Battery Recycling
Super Cheap Auto Group is currently exploring the options to offer its consumers the ability to return directly to our retail stores selected products which will be collected and distributed to recycling facilities.
The products we are currently exploring are as follows:-
- Used automotive batteries - these can be returned to a recycling facility where the lead and plastic is reused in manufacturing new products. We are currently trialling this in WA with a planned national rollout in 2009 based on a successful pilot.
- Used engine oil - this can be collected and returned to a recycling facility where it is decanted from the plastic tub then cleaned and filtered then sold off for bunker fuel and low grade base oils.
- Other products like dry cell battery collection - used brake shoes & pads as part of a waste metal collection.
Our plan is to continue to explore these options as an added service and convenience for our consumers.
Once we have piloted each of these and developed the best option to service our consumer base, the environment and Super Cheap Auto Group, we would look to roll these initiatives out nationally.
Goldcross Cycles Carbon Calculator
Located on the Goldcross Cycles website, the carbon calculator allows cyclists to pledge their commitment to our planet by swapping carbon high transport for earth friendly cycling.
After keying in information including weekly destinations, car type and engine size, price paid for petrol etc, the calculator shows your contribution in terms of CO2 reduction, calories burned and dollars saved on petrol.
